Welcome to Charlo
Charlo Primary is a parallel-medium school, co-educational school providing education for learners from as early as Grade RR to Grade 7. Presently, we have three classes per grade: one Afrikaans and two English classes respectively.
Our school is situated in the leafy suburb of Charlo, Port Elizabeth. We cater for children from the surrounding suburbs of Lovemore Heights, Springfield, Mount Pleasant, Walmer Heights, and more.
In January 1973, the school was founded and developed on a farm belonging to the late Mr Charles Lovemore. The name “Charlo” is derived from the first four letters of his name and the first two letters of his surname. The class of 1974 had a total of 21 learners, and over the years, the school has grown and is currently the educational home to over 600 happy learners.
Mrs A. Daniell
The first principal, Mr O.B. Heunis, designed the school’s badge. The motto, “FAITH,” is very familiar throughout Port Elizabeth. Mr Willie Dolphin was the first chairman of the Parent-Teachers’ Association, and Mr Smith was the first chairman of the School Governing Board.
The three school houses were derived from these three individuals’ surnames. Mr J.R. Viljoen was the second principal for almost twenty years, and he designed the original school uniform. He and fellow staff members were also the composers of our school song. The current arrangement of the school song was completed by Mr W.E. Hughes in 1993.
In 1992, after the retirement of Mr Viljoen, the school welcomed Mr A.J.J. van Schalkwyk as its third principal. His successor, in July 1995, was Mr J. McLeod, who retired in 2018.
Our current principal, and the school’s first female principal, is Mrs A. Daniell.
